Project 333: My Capsule Wardrobe

My capsule wardrobe for October-December 2014 is comfortable, “dressy casual” and neutral with pops of red and green fitting with my autumn coloring.

To read about how I went from an overstuffed closet to a capsule wardrobe of 33 items read my post Project 333: Purging & Planning. After thinking about simplifying for 6 months I purchased the “dress with less” microcourse by Courtney Carver and made the leap from just purging to simplifying down to 33 items.

Alright, here’s the rundown of my 33 items! Remember, this does not include underwear, workout wear and sleepwear, and I have also chosen to not include layering tank tops, a black t-shirt and a white t-shirt, and a small selection of jewelry. (R) means replace and (S) means potential swap.

TOPS

Alt text White lightweight hoodie pullover (Gap) - this is my most casual top and the last thing I added to my 33, it could have just been workout wear but I decided I wanted to wear it for more than just exercise!

Cream tee (Calvin Klein) - I had been looking for an “dressy” tee and was excited when I found this at the CK outlet, the hem and pocket detail make it special so it works on its own or with a scarf or cardigan.

White cotton tunic (Loft) - this longer shirt has a nice detail along the sleeves and I like to wear a bold necklace or scarf with it.

(R) Chambray button-up (Old Navy) - I definitely want a chambray shirt in my fall capsule wardrobe but don’t love any of the three that I own, all from Old Navy, so I’m putting this one in my 33 with the intention of replacing it, hopefully with a chambray shirt that comes in my November Stitch Fix box!

Black dolman sleeve sweater (H&M) - I have loved this sweater for a couple years, it’s very forgiving, comfy, and easy to wear.

Black/red/white striped dolman cowl neck sweater (Carson’s) - this is not the most versatile sweater but I do really like it and wanted to include it in my 33.

CARDIGANS

Alt text Green open cardigan (Target) - When I laid out all my cardigans there was an overabundance of neutrals but I do want some color in my capsule wardrobe, plus green is my favorite color so I chose this one!

Red open cardigan (Target) - Same style as the green one, goes with several of my scarves.

Black classic cardigan (Loft) - this is a good quality classic cardigan.

Black/white striped waterfall cardigan (Burlington Coat Factory) - this is a comfy, cozy cardigan.

Grey waterfall cardigan (Gap) - another cozy cardigan.

(S) Tan cardigan (Ralph Lauren) - This cardigan has neat suede shoulder detail, nice buttons and pockets, it’s definitely a more unique piece. I debated between this and a tan version of my classic black cardigan, we’ll see if I am happy with my decision! If I’m not I’ll swap them.

BOTTOMS

Alt text Light relaxed skinny jeans (Loft) - comfy and causal.

Dark skinny jeans (Banana Republic) - my most versatile pair of jeans, can be work with almost every top (I wouldn’t wear it with chambray and maybe with the pullover hoodie), and can be worn with almost all the shoes.

(R) Dark flare jeans (Elle/Kohls) - I want to replace these with a pair of dark trouser jeans, maybe from my Stitch Fix box!

Black skinny jeans (Gap) - these will basically act as my black leggings since I don’t have tops that cover my butt and would work with a real legging.

(R) Olive ankle pants (Loft) - these work with several pairs of shoes so they work now, but I do want to replace them with a colored (olive or red) skinny pant.

Black maxi skirt (Gap) - I wore this to a wedding recently with a belted chambray shirt and it inspired me to try wearing this skirt in the fall with different tops and boots.

SHOES

Alt text Cognac boots (Nine West Vintage America) - My FAVORITE!

(R) Black boots (Simple Vera/Kohls) - These served me well for a couple winters but they need to GO! I need to find a new pair of nice black boots.

Black ankle boots (Clarks) - I love how comfy these are but in the past I haven’t styled them with anything other than a trouser or bootcut jean, maybe during this project I can change that and wear them with a skinny jean or maxi skirt.

Leather flat (Nine West) - These are ancient and didn’t get a lot of use last year, I’m not going to intentionally replace them yet, but if I found another flat that I absolutely loved I would be fine with replacing them.

Grey TOMS - My casual shoes!

(S) Black/multi sandal (Clarks) - I may swap these out with a fuzzy winter boot once winter hits.

JACKETS

Alt text Denim jacket (J.Crew Factory)

Red/grey plaid long wool coat (Tommy Hilfiger)

Black puffy vest (Sam’s Club)

SCARVES & BAG

Alt text Red/cream/black, black/pink/tan, leopard, autumn colors and blue/green.

Black/brown “leather” backpack - I use this as my purse/diaper bag!
