Simon Joseph Herschberger: Week 22

Camping was the big thing this week, Si’s first camping trip required lots of preparation from mommy. :)

Camping prep: I have always liked to be prepared for trips, and now with Si I feel much better when I have lists and prep in advance of a trip, so I started making a list with Kyle the weekend before and worked on the list some more each day and then the last few days before the trip I started gathering everything on the back porch. Kyle drove the RV we were taking home the night before we left so that night we did some packing and then the following day I finished packing it up with all our stuff. Between our stuff and Lee/Stacy/the girls stuff it was packed in there, but it all fit!! On the way home from our camping trip I went back through the list and took off stuff we didn’t use, and then made a separate even more pared down list for when we camp in smaller units. We definitely had too much baby stuff, didn’t need as many clothes, and didn’t need as many things to contain him, we ended up just using the Pack ‘N Play a little and during the day if he wasn’t on a blanket or being held he was in his carseat/stroller being walked.

5 months old: Si turned 5 months on Thursday! Time sure is going fast! At 5 months he’s rolling like a wild man, chewing and sucking on everything, playing with toys, laughing, is very vocal at times, and is extremely curious.

CAMPING: This camping trip has been planned for many months as we got reservations at Holland State Park on the beach campground the day reservations opened up. It was Ann & Terry (Kyle’s parents) on one campsite and us on another, and Lee & Stacy (Kyle’s brother/sister-in-law) and their girls came too! We all got in Friday afternoon/evening and set up camp, I got Simon put to bed and we just hung out. I had planned on Si sleeping in the Pack ‘N Play since he’s used to it, but we put him to bed in our bed since we were all still up and wanted to hang out in the camper and I ended up just keeping him there with us. The highlights of the trip were:

  1. Breakfasts - Each family took a turn cooking breakfast and each one was so delicious. Kyle and I did breakfast burritos, I had prepped almost everything for breakfast burritos the day before at home and Kyle cooked the eggs and hash browns that morning. Mom and dad Herschberger did waffles and sausage, and Lee and Stacy did pancakes, sausage and loaded scrambled eggs (with all our leftover burrito fillings!).

  2. NEW BIKE! The first day Kyle, Si and I went into town to get Lee and Stacy’s bike tires fixed and Kyle ended up buying me a new bike!!! My bike had gotten stolen last year in Indy, and then Kyle had gotten a nice new bike and had started talking about getting me an electric assist bike so that I could keep up with him since he can go so much faster and farther than I can. We had looked around and asked around but hadn’t yet seen an electric assist bike in a bike shop until now! This bike shop carried a Canadian brand of bikes, Norco, and BionX electric bike systems. They sold us the floor model for a great deal!!! So this bike gives me a “boost” by multiplying my efforts pedaling by 25%, 50%, 100% or 200%. There are also 4 regenerative modes that give me resistance while pedaling and recharge the battery (great for downhills!).

  3. Walking around the campsite - Si spent a lot of time in his stroller just walking around the campsite. I love looking at the other campers and seeing how people set up camp, plus it was just nice to be outside!!!

  4. Bike ride to Tunnel Park - On Sunday morning we all rode out to Tunnel Park, Si did good in his trailer, didn’t fuss at all! We took some great family pictures out on the dunes there with the water in the background.

  5. Boat ride - Sunday afternoon our friends Emily, Stephen and baby Beckett picked us up and we went for a boat ride! Surprisingly Si did not fall asleep on the boat so he was awake for HOURS between the bike ride and the boat ride.

  6. The puzzle - We bought a puzzle on Amazon and it was so fun! It was a funny camping scene AND the picture on the box is a little different than the actual puzzle so it was HARD! We tried to finish it but didn’t quite make it so we’ll have to redo it at home. :)

  7. Ice cream date - On Sunday night Kyle and I rode bikes down to the General Store for some delicious ice cream and Si stayed back with Grammy, Poppy, Uncle Lee and Aunt Stacy and cousins Dani and Kaylin.

  8. The ride home - It was really nice riding in the RV on the way home! We stopped at a farm stand/ice cream shop and got ice cream in homemade waffle cones (YUM) and then put the slide out and hung out. I nursed Simon, Kyle made lunch, Si got to roll around on a blanket on the floor, it was great!

Weight (on Tuesday, on the digital scale at moms group): 13lb 1oz

Clothes: 1 pair of Circo NB jeans, mostly 3-6 month stuff, and 6 month PJ’s

Diapers: Cloth diapers during the day (BumGenius Freetime), size 2 Luvs with NightLock at night

Firsts: (1) CAMPING! And with that lots of firsts, first time riding in an RV, first time taking a long ride in the bike trailer, first time on a boat… (2) Um, so I tried to give you formula and you HATED it! I didn’t have much breast milk left in my frozen stash and was getting worried about having some to mix with solids soon and thought if I was away from you for a feeding we could do formula since that happens maybe one feeding a week. Well, we tried two different powdered formulas and ready-made formula and you would make the worst faces and spit the nipple out. So my friend Emily came to the rescue and gave me a bunch of frozen breast milk so now I feel much better having at least a day or two of feedings in the freezer.

Toys: Marcus and Beth sent us a Sophie the Giraffe toy and book. We have renamed the giraffe Marcus and you LOVE it. Move over monkey, there’s a new animal in town.

Sleep: This week you decided to frequently wake up 2 hours after eating demanding attention… Those nights before camping were pretty unrestful. Camping you did better than expected but not too surprising considering you were snuggled with mommy. :)

What has mommy been reading about: Introducing meat to infants, tongue and lip ties

Likes: Bath time with Grandpa is the BEST!

Dislikes: You’ve been rolling onto your belly, getting mad, and then not rolling off your belly even though you know how!
