Simon Joseph Herschberger: Week 10

Simon’s first full week of sleeping in his crib and in his room alone! He’s still waking a lot at night but seems to be getting better at settling himself down. Sometimes he even just hangs out in his crib awake but not crying and then goes to sleep!

Routine: Still going well! Little man wakes up 45 minutes into every single nap, but usually if I let him cry a bit he’ll either settle himself or I’ll go in and settle him and he’ll go back to sleep for the rest of his nap. We have great awake time and typically play together for part of it and then he plays on his own. Sometimes I disrupt his afternoon nap and we go out and run errands. When we went to the doctor on Monday I confirmed that at his age and weight he could indeed go more than 3-4 hours at night without a feeding, like, maybe 5-6 hours, so that night I decided to see if he could skip his 2am feed and he did! We’ve done that every night since and he still wakes up in the middle of the night every night, but he settles down with a pacifier. Eventually he’ll sleep through, we’re just going to stay consistent with him.

Doctor/Chiropractor: On Monday we went to the doctor for his 2 month appointment/shots. He did pretty good! He was a little fussy later in the day and struggled with naps, but not too bad. Then on Tuesday we almost forgot his chiropractor appointment but made it in time, he did great again and we won’t go back for 2 weeks this time. She said he’s improving, something about his atlas number was 80-something and last time it was 100-something… I don’t know what that means, I’ll ask next time we go.

Video Monitor: When Kyle got home from his trip last weekend I had him set up my phone and iPad with the app to use the video monitor we have in the nursery, it’s actually a wireless IP camera, a Foscam. That’s really helped me with sleeping in the basement and with helping him through naps because I can look at him and see if he’s all out crying, more just fussing, if he’s become un-swaddled, etc…

Baby Shower: This Saturday was the shower for cousin Lizzie that I helped plan! I spent a couple nap times this week making photobooth props and some decorations. The shower went awesome, it was so fun getting everyone together, the food that Nicole coordinated was delish, and as a bonus, Simon was a little doll the whole time, so well behaved! The shower was Madeline/French themed after the books because Lizzie’s little girl is going to be named Madeline!

All in all we had such a fun week! He seems to really like his routine. Yes, there are tears at naptime and bedtime, but he is so happy during awake time, settles down from crying very quickly after I get him up in the morning and after naps, seems to be doing a little better with spitting up (still spits up too much IMO but seems like it might be less, doesn’t spit up at night like he used to), and is just a really fun boy to spend time with!

Weight (on Monday, at the doctors): 10lb 6oz (also, they measured him and he’s 22.5 inches)

Clothes: Same old, same old. Newborn and some 0-3. I haven’t had time to go through clothes to pull out some more 0-3 stuff yet.

Diapers: Size 1’s. Every poop has been a massive blowout, haha. I don’t know if the diapers are just a wee bit big or the poops are really forceful but sometimes there’s more poop outside the diaper than inside! I don’t know what I’m going to do when this happens when we’re not at home!

Firsts: (1) Skipped a nighttime feed (2) I forgot to say this last week, but you sleep in your room by yourself now! (3) You got your first round of shots at the doctor and took it pretty well!

Toys: Nothing new, you usually spend a little time in the morning cooing at the mobile on your swing, you really like it!

Sleep: Still working on it. You’re waking up a lot at night, sometimes settling yourself and sometimes mommy helps.

What has mommy been reading about: 2 month shots, swaddling blankets (I think when you outgrow your SwaddleMe’s we’re going to try the Miracle Blanket), night waking, tummy sleeping, infant congestion

Likes: So many things, you’ve been a pretty happy baby this week! Basically you love awake time where you have mommy (or really anyone’s) undivided attention.

Dislikes: You apparently hate the middle of the night, it makes you cry. Haha
