Baby Herschberger: Week 37

Well, depending on your definition, I have a “full-term” baby! Starting today I am eligible to birth at the birth center, from now until 42 weeks (January 19). Kyle is gone today-Thursday so I’ll keep chipping away at my to-do list while he’s gone and when he gets back it’s time to celebrate Christmas and wait for Simon to arrive!

I am still a little sick, going on 2 weeks now. :(

During our week in Louisville I was able to rest a decent amount, hot showers twice a day kept me feeling pretty good and I had enough energy to keep up. This week I haven’t rested as well, hot showers just aren’t doing it and I have been exhausted.

I started out the week sitting at the computer doing some online shopping! I had my Amazon Registry Completion Discount (15%) so I went through that registry and decided what things I wanted to get now and have ready before baby comes and what things could wait. I ended up getting:

  1. Brica In-Sight Mirror (you attach this to the headrest of the seat the carseat is in so that you can look in your rear-view and see the baby)

  2. Sealed Wet Bag (for stowing dirty cloth diapers and clothes on-the-go)

  3. HoMedics SoundSpa On-The-Go (I’m a big fan of sound machines, so when I saw this little portable one that you can hook to a carseat or wherever, I knew I wanted it)

  4. White Cloth Diaper (I wanted 16 diapers and after my baby showers I had 15 and since none were plain white I got a plain white one)

  5. “Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with Your Baby” (this book was recommended to me by a friend)

  6. Marpac Dohm-DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner (this is the kind of sound machine we have in our bedroom and we wanted for the nursery also)

  7. Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station (just a little on-the-go changing station for the diaper bag)

  8. bumGenius Diaper Sprayer (this is apparently all the rage for those who cloth diaper)

  9. Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra (I was not feeling great about the nursing bras I got from Target so I did a little research and decided this bra was worth a try)

  10. Vicks Baby Rectal Thermometer (self explanatory)

  11. Changing Pad Cover (I had an adain + anais changing pad cover picked out, but it was $29.95, a little spendy I think, so I looked again and found a cute one from Summer Infant that was $10.29 so I got two of them so when one inevitably gets dirty there’s a backup)

  12. Charlie’s Soap Laundry Powder (I read this is really good for washing cloth diapers in and will help them stay looking nice and new)

I also used the money I earned from my last few photoshoots to purchase some photography items specifically for newborn photography and for taking pictures of Simon!

  1. Large Puck Shape Beanbag (this is for posing newborns on)

  2. Background Support (for holding up fabric/blankets that I drape on the beanbag, or for holding paper backdrops)

  3. Heavy Duty Muslin Clamps (for clamping fabric/blankets to the backdrop support)

  4. Reflector (I have been needing to get one of these and start using it, finally ordered it)

  5. PhotoVision 6” One-Shot Digital Mini Calibration Target w/ DVD (this is for setting a custom white balance, will be super helpful for studio/flash shooting)

  6. Seamless Background Paper, 53” wide x 12 yards, Super White (I debated between black and white, and between 53” and 107” but in the end decided white would be more versatile and that for what I want to do and for the space I have when I set up a studio in my house that the 53” would be more practical)

  7. Stretch Baby Wraps (after watching a newborn photography class on CreativeLive I knew I wanted some of these stretch wraps, I ended up getting three, a white, a khaki and a grey)

I got most of this stuff in the mail the next day and the day after, a few things won’t come for a few weeks.

The rest of the week I rested as much as I could, wrapped Christmas presents, sent out the rest of our Christmas cards, and did a little Christmas decorating! Alt text

Kyle and I have very different taste in television shows so we’ll go through phases where we eat dinner together, then each watch our own TV shows separately, and then spend some more time together before bed. Something about the hormones and being sick this week had me feeling “needy” and almost every evening I asked Kyle to just hang out and talk to me instead of us each doing our own thing. We usually ended up sipping tea together, sometimes at the kitchen counter (our dining room) and sometimes in the nursery.

At the midwife on Friday I measured at 39 weeks! I’ve been measuring 1 week ahead, but that’s 2 weeks ahead! The midwife did say the baby hadn’t fully dropped, she could still wiggle his head, and that once he dropped all the way I would probably measure a little smaller. She asked what Kyle and I each weighed at birth, I was 7lb 5.5oz, Kyle was 7lb 10oz. She said that’s a nice size baby but that our baby would probably be bigger, haha. :)

Because I was sick I canceled most of my plans for the week, just went out for my midwife appointment and for Kyle’s work party. On Saturday we stayed home most of the day and tackled some more things on our to-do list. I mostly did cleaning and organizing, Kyle tackled the installation of the diaper sprayer, and worked on setting up the basic audio baby monitor and the more complicated wireless IP camera.

«Pregnancy Update»

Weight gain: Still below 30lb.

What I’ve been eating: I’m not as crazy thirsty, but still thirsty. Not as hungry. Not feeling very good after I eat. I’m having reflux/heartburn type issues, which are not things I’ve ever experienced before so I have trouble identifying them, but I think that’s what’s going on!

Baby/pregnancy purchases: I bought a ton of stuff! In addition to all the stuff I listed above that I ordered at the beginning of the week I bought two more things late in the week. I got a hefty wipes container, for the main changing station in the nursery I wanted something with some weight to it that would stay put as I yanked wipes out. I also want to put together two baskets with all the stuff I need for changing diapers, one for the living room and one for the basement, those will just have the regular containers that wipes come in from the store. And this morning I was reading another blog post with “must-have baby items” and the lady had a genius idea - to have an exra long iPhone cord! The cord I have now is a pain the length it is by my bed, and would be super annoying in the nursery, so I ordered two extra-long iPhone cords and I think they’re majorly going to come in handy.

Babies growth and development status: Baby Si is the size of a winter melon, anywhere from 6.2-9.2lbs, and anywhere from 18.9 inches to 20.9 inches. He’s still practicing inhaling, exhaling, sucking, gripping and blinking.
